Denistone Tile Roofing on the Ridge

A ridge between two rivers

Denistone sits on its own ridge at around 50 metres, between the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers. It is a small suburb with a long history: The Hermitage at Pennant Avenue dates from about 1842 and is on the State Heritage Register, and Denistone House, rebuilt in the 1870s, now stands inside the grounds of Ryde Hospital. Darvall Park, a forest reserve near the railway line, carries Sydney blue gum. Terry Road, Victoria Road and Brush Road mark out ground that was once part of the Brush Farm estate.

Around four dwellings in five here are separate houses, most of them brick and most of them tiled.

Pointing, blue gum litter, and the heritage question

The characteristic Denistone job is a tile roof restoration. The tiles are often still serviceable and the mortar is not: bedding has gone drummy under the ridge and hip capping, the pointing has cracked, and water runs under the caps along the apex before dropping onto a batten and tracking away from the fault.

Darvall Park and the mature street trees add the second half of it. Blue gum litter mats in valleys and gutters rather than flushing through, and a valley that holds debris holds water against the tray until it rusts out.

Worth knowing before you choose a colour or a material: the City of Ryde LEP 2014 heritage conservation areas were expanded in late 2020, and the Darvall Estate and Chatham Road areas near Denistone are among them.
